Thule

Graeme Milton, Graham Perkins, Simon Doling, Martin Byrne
1993
With all due respect to both Norwegian groups (which there isn't much actually), the only one trve Thule that matters were this London group formed around 1987.
Now, while they didn't got much name outside local Camden scene, let alone England, they deserved much more appreciation for their unique experimental leftfield big beat/dub/industrial post rock. Yap, that's pretty much how they sounded like, making a brilliant british link from the 80's to the 90's, while performing mostly in western european countries and leaving not much recorded audio out there to document that.
Their old myspace page credits a long list of musicians in the line up, though I believe only the first five listed here were the main core, correct me if I'm wrong:
Graeme Milton - Drums, Programming, Percussion
Graham Perkins - Guitar, Keyboards, Programming, Percussion
Martin Byrne - Bass, Guitar, Keys, Vocals, Percussion, Programming
Simon Doling - Bass, Percussion (also played drums for World Domination Enterprises for some time, later to join Terminal Cheesecake and be replaced by Charlie Finke)
Perkins, Doling, Byrne, Milton
1993
Dave Smith - Vocal, Percussion
Mick Ritchie - Keyboards, Percussion
Kev Poree - Live Sound, Keyboards (from FOH mix position)

Their first 12", 1988's Dr. Lloyd, I've never managed to get, but two tracks out of it were featured on later releases, leaving us with only two tracks missing from their discography. Here's what I first thought of them before even knowing about Simon Doling's connection- "Terminal Cheesecake joining forces with WDE trying to mimic how Bark Psychosis would sound playing big beat records". Really, they fuse it all through industrialish very early big beat with dub touches plus heavy/ noisy rock tracks (Disko Beach, Dynamo, Murderball and few more).
Influences on myspace said to be Chrome, Kraftwerk, Tackhead, Can, 23 Skidoo, Cabaret Voltaire.. (and if I may add Finitribe, Slab!, Meat Beat Manifesto ?)
Later on Perkins, Milton and Byrne joined forces with Jason White acting as 95 Nil, playing pretty much what they did with Thule.

Belfast Ghetto - Live At Millennium, New York City

I found this one many years ago, I'm pretty sure on some Sonic Youth forum or something like that, but can't recall, so much respect to whoever recorded/ripped/upload it back than. I left the folder same as it was so if you recognize and want a credit send a message.
Belfast Ghetto, better known as Beirut Slump, better known as another Lydia Lunch project.
All in all they performed only four shows, active around the same time as Teenage Jesus.
If you've never heard Beirut Slump you should check them out first via Shut Up And Bleed compilation, including their only single plus a few more studio and later live tracks, all in better quality than what is presented here, this one is.. for fans.
This is their debut show, the only one under the name Belfast Ghetto, at the Millennium Film Workshop, 66 East 4th Street, Manhattan. As you can expect audio quality is not the best, but hey, at least it's FLAC..
Other than Mrs. Lunch who only plays guitar here, another worth mentioning name to catch your eye will be Jim Sclavunos on drums.
Gotta give last credit to From The Archives where you can get much more info on this and other Lunch (and other's) projects.

Mildew - Flat On The Face / +

Original '98 cover
So after Israeli group 3H split up, both drummer David Oppenheim and bass player Reem Hareuveny moved to new york, forming there short living trio called One Two Four Nine (nice alt. rock, I'll post their album somewhen), than, same year (1995), going even further, towards much more extreme and experimental realms, acting as the semi-active to this day, menacing metallic noise duo Barbara.
In 1997 David's solo project Mildew, Ovesh in Hebrew, released it's first cassette [if you have it, please share]. Mildew was his first shift towards electronics (at least recorded, as far as I know), using samples, keys, computer and triggers.
After a few Barbara demos, Reem had to come back to Israel in 1998, due to personal problems, leaving David alone, to concentrate on Mildew. Flat On The Face is the only full length, recorded straight after Reem left, and it is one of his finest creations in my opinion (and let the record show that I truly admire a lot of his stuff, and he has released a vast variety).
Musically I always get an image of the Scorpion VS Johnny Cage fight, while trippin badly on a large dose of ketamine, and that Fear Factory remix in the background getting a minimal remix by Duran Duran Duran having a program crash. A Y2K version of Chu Ishikawa's Tetsuo OST. Or as his own legendary label Heart And Crossbone states "super slow, dark & repetitive electronics, drum machine gone out-of-control, a digitized binhexed godflesh floating in cyber-outer-space".
This was self released as an "interactive piece" with an external controller, I'm uncertain about the meaning of this, since I own only the 2005 repackaged re-release. But there it is on bandcamp, enjoy.

An interview with David a bit after, but same era, if you're willing to know more about
Bonus track for fans, unreleased - Shir HaShiryem (I think it was recorded after the album, but not quite sure)

boy man machine
Now for the plus meaning - just paying your attention to a new release coming up next month, Drose - boy man machine +
Those agonizing long "end of the year" list I've written on this humble blog, are filled with great albums, but to be honest, only a few truly lasts with me afterward. 2016's Drose is still a one I come back to, that's why I give it's upcoming exciting re-release this very special honor.
Cmptr Stdnts, what seems to be like a promising label (responsible for last year's Big'n EP), are in charge for giving boy man machine a new life, both again on vinyl and more important, first time on CD, with bonus songs and a very thoughtful design.
Do I need to write again about the brilliant dissonance between the soulful emotional vocals to doomish industro music on this one, harmonized together in a wonderful biomechanical album ? I think not..
Do yourselves a favor and pre-order it here

Pain Teens

So.. this blog has been up a couple of years now, and so far not even one Texas band posted. I'm very ashamed and take full responsibility for this disgrace. Hence a Pain Teens bootleg archive filled with goodies for whomever it may concern.
This post includes both audio and video bootlegs recorded by many different brave souls whom I don't know, and so comes in varied qualities, some better some worse, all descent enjoyable level in my opinion.

If in any case you've wasted your teen years not knowing who Pain Teens are, you might wanna do yourself some favor and check them out. Lucky for you all of their full lengths (and the long sought rare tapes) are available on singer's Bliss Blood Bandcamp page.
So thanks Miss Blood, Scott Ayers, Pain Teens, and all those anonymous original recordes.

David Linton - Orchesography

Early examples for Linton's unique bashing rhythm qualities, can be heard listening to him playing percussion and drums for some NY groups on the less known side of no wave scene, such as I/S/M, Interference or Plus Instruments.
1986's Orchesography, is his only solo album, released via Branca's Neutral Records, self produced with the help of Bruce Tovsky and Roli Mosimann.
Definitely an early bird, experimenting with noise gate on drums to generate samples, and while not the first, this album has it's own magic for me, mixing upbeat tense rhythms along with mostly classical theatrical samples. Fits well with his other art involvements.
If you like early Keith LeBlanc, looking for an instrumental, less new wave jumpy Foetus version, or have any electro-acoustic tendencies, give this one a listen.

3ח aka שלוש חית                                                                                                                                        3H aka Shalosh Hait
David Opp, Ran Slavin, Reem Hareuveny
Photo by Ofer Azulay, at Pargod
This enigmatic name belonged to a somewhat legendary (for me at least) Jerusalem trio active in the late 80's. They were part of a local "scene" circling a few bands which mostly played at Pargod theater, which is the name the scene was known as. "Rock sessions" often occurred, comprised of different members of the scene, free-thinking, improvising and experimenting with each other.
3H began more as an idea of such art rock act, going through name variations (3H-B, B-3H, etc..) on each show, without committing to a specific sound, often involving industrial acts, sampling (one of the first to do so in Israel), inviting guests (for instance a street violin player they met a day earlier) and on and on. After some time they've settled on 3H and began performing with more "proper" songs.

Their roots lay in 1982's Cholera, the first hardcore (and actually first punk) band in Israel, including both David (Dudik) Oppenheim and Ran Slavin, drummer and guitarist for 3H. After Cholera, Slavin took off to London for a couple years, and came back to form the group with Dudik. Both of them at the time art students, were joined by Reem Hareuveny on bass, thus creating what I see as one of the most important groups here in local alternative music.
Still retaining the pissed and abrasive energy they had in them, 3H were playing their own kind of post punk, unlike anything I can think of. You can hear the vast wide influences through Crime & The City Solution, Swans, This Heat, Neubauten and generally, anything that was worth listening to at the time, but yet again, just as influences. They didn't imitate any of these, or anyone else.

Their only album recorded in 1990, released 1991, limited to 500 copies, is the one above. You SHOULD check it out. An absolute all-time fave for me, featuring ten tracks of their varied repertoire and one hell of a menacing cover of Carole King.
That's the re-mastered version up there, re-released in 2009, also limited to 500, this time with an extra disc filled with unreleased live bonuses, rehearsal material, and some from their second unfulfilled album. Making justice to a local group which never got the respect it deserved.

There's plenty of material that still lays in dust on tapes somewhere, and it's a shame. Here's some stuff I managed to scavenge, mostly ripped it off a short series of radio specials called "Soundman of Pargod" by Eli Shargorodsky, who was among other things, the soundman of Pargod, recording many shows and stuff, handling a great archive. So much much much respect to him (and if by any chance you read this, please continue sharing Eli !)
Ran, Dudik, Reem

Bonus unreleased material

198? - Bass I
198? - Mystery Dance (Elvis Costello Cover) + מעדן חלב [TV Commercial cover, radio rip]
198? - Scarface Runner [Live at Pargod, radio rip]
198? - Untitled
198? - שחרחורת [Ha'breira Ha'tiv'it Cover, without Slavin, with Eli Shargo, radio rip]

1989.08.10 - Untitled [Live at Pargod, radio rip]
1989.08.10 - Untitled [Live at Pargod, radio rip]

Eventually 3H dissolved around 92, as all three members proceed exploring and innovating for more than a three decades length careers, via many other brilliant musical projects and through other art forms. I'll probably post some more of their music, I have nothing but pure appreciation for these guys.

Upsidedown Cross - Hate

Spawned to the world in 1998, just to be kept indoors, locked up as if it was Bad Boy Bubby, this Boston boy turns 21 this year, and I thought since it turns legal it'll be nice to post it up for good.
Hate is the unreleased third album by obnoxious sludgelords Upsidedown Cross. This time with a 6-monsters line up. As a matter of fact it already exist online, and you can check it with some more info on this youtube link, thanks to Michael Gillham of Black Operations (among many other things) who runs this fantastic tube archive filled with much more Kilslug related projects rarities.

Slab! - 2nd Peel Session

Dray, Risso, Morris, Jarvis, Davies
(Descension era, late '87)
A follow-up post for the original Slab! rarities post, here's the long sought, (almost) full second Peel Session by experimental industro-metal exceptionals, Slab!
Recorded at February 1987, between Parallax Avenue and Smoke Rings ep's, featuring probably same line up as those, and two unreleased songs, all in all, sounds akin to Descension than to earlier releases.
These tracks were badly edited from a December 1987 show, by your humble servant, missing only one track, which was broadcast only on one show (March 1987), available for listening at the British Library sound archive (item no. B3880/1 in the main catalogue). I've asked for it but it's open for public only in the place itself due to BBC copyrights. So if you manage to get in London and put your sneaky stealing hands on it, I do believe both Sir Peel and Mr. Dray would approve that ;)

2nd Peel Session - Recorded 01.02.1987 [Broadcast on 30.12.1987 Peel Show]

Davis, Dray, Jarvis, Risso, Rawson, Woodger
(Mars On Ice era, late '86)
1. Undriven Snow [Early, slower version than Descension's one]
2. Mining Town In Lotusland
3. Bloodflood [Same lyrics will be used in later track called Gutter Busting]
4. Parallax Avenue [Missing track]

As said, I believe correct line up here will be:
Stephen Dray - Vocals / Tenor Saxophone
Bill Davies - Electrical Bass Guitar / Effects
Paul Jarvis - Guitar
Dave Morris - Guitar / Bass Guitar / Alto Saxophone
Robin Risso - drums
Hugh Rawson - Trumpet
Neill Woodger - Trombone
I left full instruments credits as they appear on both Parallax Avenue and Smoke Rings, but it's probably much less than that on this session. It's a bit hard to determine exactly what horn instruments are actually playing due to the semi-descent audio quality. Might be even without Hugh or Neil.

And major thanks for the John Peel Wiki for helping me with info and links, beautiful site.

World Domination Enterprises - Live at Tegen Tonen Festival

Keith Dobson & Digger Metters at Paradiso
Picture taken by Bauke Koster
Just another short one, in honor of Steve Jameson, bass player for WDE who passed away. Only a few bass players could get as heavy as he did in the 80's.
Found this bootleg last year, thought now's a fine time to upload it, than saw it was already uploaded here, which I assume is the fellow who originally taped or ripped it, so kudos. Anyway, no reason for this incredible documentation not to be shared again.

A fine demonstration of Steve's talent and pounding muddy sound and in general for this group's unique chemistry. Abusing their instruments to create their abrasive dense sound.

Hash Over

Don't like them post without words, but since I got no time for this, and I still want the blog to remain somewhat active, here's a band I honestly got zero extra info 'bout anyway. Line up can be found on discogs.. Bunch of frenchies from Dijon I think, making the usual oh so lovely post punk noise rock with elementary math rock, FFO: Birthday Party, Jesus Lizard, Cows, or going more local, stuff like Sloy..
I prefer the second one, a wee more abstract in my ears, Branca-ish guitars.

Harry Crews

Lunch & Gordon

Just finished a book called Scar Lover by Harry Crews.. yeah that was a waste of time.. not quite sure if I should ever try another one by Crews, but I do know that I'm not gonna take any more book recommendations from these girls.

Harry Crews was a short project which got some fame thanks to the fact it's a collaboration between Lydia Lunch and Kim Gordon, among with drummer Lisa Tomicich (Sadie Mae) and second guitar player Patricia Place (who left before any show was played).
They went on a Euro tour in 1988, and broke up after that, releasing their sole official release Naked In Garden Hills (1990), which is mainly their last show in Vienna, plus three songs off their London show (which you can find here fully).
Lucky for the fans, some more material was recorded live and that's what this one is about.

Some info was again, taken of the great From The Archives site, which made this post so much easier to write, thanks.
